How to Hold Yourself Accountable as a Home Based Consultant

Being a home based coach or consultant can be tough. Sometimes, It feels like you’re stuck in a rut and are struggling to hold yourself accountable.

While it can be difficult not to feel down about the situation, it’s important to remember that home-based consulting takes patience, resilience, and dedication.

If you’re struggling with successfully managing your career as a home-based consultant, I suggest trying out future self journalling to keep yourself accountable.

One struggle for home-based consultants is managing your time during work. Many people have heard of the typical time management strategies, but time management does not have a one-size-fits-all solution. Just like different people have different learning styles, each person should figure out a time management style that is right for them as well.

Time Management for Home Based Consultants

For example, consultants who consider themselves organised but want to become more efficient should consider using the task-batch method. With this time management technique, you group similar types of tasks together and complete them all before moving on to the next.

You could be updating your website and social media materials first, then move on to your scheduled client calls later on in the day.

This time management method may seem unconventional, but it is extremely useful in helping you from falling into the trap of multitasking, yet somehow still getting nothing done.

If you are more introverted, a unique time management technique to try is the Pomodoro technique. With the name originating from the traditional “tomato timer”, the Pomodoro technique comprises 25-minute bursts of work, followed by a 5-minute break.

This process is repeated 4 times, before taking a longer break. This technique is a great trick to set “mini-goals” throughout the day, which feel much more manageable than seeing a lump sum of tasks to get done and tackling them without a plan.

Becoming a Home Based Consultant

Whether you are just starting out as a home-based consultant or looking to pivot your skills to a new career as a consultant, finding an effective way to manage your time is crucial to succeeding in the long term.

In a world where working from home has become the new normal, it’s important to stay healthy, well, and mindful while pursuing your career as a home-based consultant.
