8 Tips for Balancing Self-Care and Success

In this day and age, it’s easy to get lost in your work. When feeling busy or overwhelmed, it is difficult to think about and prioritise yourself. Self-care is often overlooked, however, it is essential to ensure our mental wellbeing.

Balancing self-care and success isn’t always easy. Follow these 8 tips to boost productivity, wellbeing, energy and resilience. 


This is the oldest trick in the book. Exercise is an excellent choice for self-care.

It reduces stress, improves mood and gives you the energy you need to get through your day. 

Start your day with exercise. You could join a gym or exercise class. Classes and boot camps are a great way to keep yourself motivated- invite your friends along, and you’ll find you enjoy it more! 

If classes and gym memberships are too much for your wallet, daunting or time-consuming, home workouts are a great alternative! 

Large gym machines can be difficult to fit into your home, so compact pieces of workout equipment are great alternatives for the home. 

These include swiss balls, jump ropes, kettlebells, medicine balls resistance bands and dumbbells.

Find a Hobby

Try out a new activity and get active

Find a hobby that interests you. If you’re outgoing, an activity that allows you to socialise is best. You can join sports teams or art classes for something different. 

If you’re more inclined to the outdoors, start hiking and rock climbing. If your hobby incorporates physical activity, you can stay fit and enjoy yourself at the same time.


We spend a third of our lives sleeping. Getting enough good quality sleep each night will make a world of difference, not only for your self-care but also your productivity the next day. 

Everyone is different in the amount of sleep they need – for some it’s the standard eight hours, for others it’s only six hours. Find out what works best for you and your lifestyle. 

It is recommended not to use your devices for a few hours before you sleep.

Screens emit a blue light that suppresses melatonin production.  This hormone is involved in regulating circadian rhythms. This means that your quality of sleep will be poor as a result. So be sure to pop your devices down before bed, and pick up a book instead! 

Another great tip is to not work in the same place you sleep. So, don’t use your laptop in bed. Your mind will start to associate your bed as a place of work. It will become a lot harder for you to switch your mind off at night. 


The hustle and bustle of the world around you means that it is now more important than ever to relax and take care of yourself. 

Research conducted in 2015 has shown meditation can have great benefits, including the reduction of anxiety symptoms. It also helps you to de-stress, improve your quality of life and cognitive function and enhance your immune system. 

Believe it or not, there are many types of meditation. So, where do you start? 

This is dependent on what you are trying to achieve. The most well-known form of meditation is mindfulness, which helps you to live within the present moment. If you’re looking to enhance focus, mantra meditation is the one for you. For effortless relaxation, try out transcendental meditation.

Whatever style of meditation you choose to practice, ensure you are in a quiet environment and are in a comfortable position.


It’s important to have a work-life balance. Keeping organised will help you achieve this. Becoming more effective and productive will give you time to focus on yourself. 

Make plans, whether it be a to-do list for the day or long-term goals. You’ll be able to keep on top of your work and better separate your work and personal life. 

Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Comparing yourself to others is damaging towards your self-care. It’s easy to scroll through countless social media posts feeling jealousy towards other people. This quote is an eye-opener:

People only showcase the good in their lives. But in your life, you see it all. So, focus on your own path in life.

Adopt Healthy Habits

Everyone has bad habits. It could be smoking, inactivity, lying and many more.

Try to switch your bad habits with healthier ones. If you’re a sucker for sugary snacks, try healthier alternatives. You’ll live a healthier lifestyle, avoid the sugar crash and will feel a sense of accomplishment by curbing your cravings. 

You don’t have to go cold turkey either. Start by substituting milk chocolate with dark chocolate or a fizzy drink with an iced fruit tea.
