Don’t Settle in Your Professional Life Just for the Money (Day 14)

We spend a lot of time working. So, it makes sense that our jobs / our businesses play a big role in our life. If you’re not happy in your career or business, you’re probably not living your best life.

It’s easy to feel there’s nothing you can do about a job or running a business you dislike, especially in an uncertain economy. However, small adjustments and some preparation can allow you to make a change for the better. You don’t have to settle.

These steps can help you transition into a new work situation.

Assess Your Skills

First, you’ll want to take an inventory of your skills, in order to get an idea of your current ‘qualifications’.

This assessment also gives you a clearer picture of your interests and where you want to go. Get as detailed as possible so that you can be prepared to undertake the next phase of career exploration, which is researching your options.

Knowing what type of work you’re most interested in is crucial to finding the best opportunities for you.

Do Your Research

Once you have an idea of the type of career route you seek, you’ll want to begin your research.

Consider, first, the area in which you live. You’ll want to find out if the work you desire is sustainable in that geographic region. You’ll also need to know what type of pay you can expect, how difficult it is to get into the field, and whether you’ll need additional education or training to enter.

If you’re considering starting your own business, look into the costs and activities required to do that, along with relevant market research to determine such things as target demographic and need for product.

Make Some Cuts

You don’t need to have everything completely planned and in place. This type of transition is quite an endeavour and will take time.

There’s no need to feel overwhelmed.

In fact, my hope is you’ll be excited at your options and opportunities. You will likely have to consider making some cuts and sacrifices in your current lifestyle in order to be able to afford to make a change.

Perhaps you’ll want to downsize your home, pay off some debts, or reduce some unnecessary luxuries.

These are just a few suggestions for ways you can prepare to make a career transition if you’re unhappy in your current situation. Your career plays a huge role in your life satisfaction. It should be something that you enjoy.
